After Life Lessons by Laila Blake and L.C. Spoering

I received this book as a review book for an honest review

This is the second book I have read about Zombies this year and I decided to read this one as the last zombie book I read was a good book.

After Life Lessons is about Emily who has been hiding out for shelter with her young son because their world has been taken over by zombies who are not like your normal zombies, they are fast and they will attack anything or anyone that gets in their way.

Emily made it out of New York by travelling through storm drains to a gas station, where her son soon becomes sick with a fever, but luckily for them a car pulls into the gas station, in the car is an army medic named Aaron.

Aaron has been living in a van with plenty of supplies from the army base and he stays on the move as not to get caught by the zombies and helping people when he can, he meets Emily while trying to get supplies from the gas station she is hiding in, Emily is armed and is desperately in need of someone to help her sick son and she pleads for him to help and when he see's how sick Emily's son is he agrees to help them.

After Life Lessons is well written and I cannot wait to read book two so I can find out what happens next.

My Interview With Jessica Brody 2014

I had the pleasure to be able to interview Jessica Brody in 2012 about her novels. Now two years later I am interviewing Jessica again to get the gossip on her Unremembered trilogy, the Fidelity Files movie and what she has coming up this year.

    

1)      First off any news on the Fidelity Files movie last I heard it had been optioned for film?

YES! I’m super excited! Some very talented and savvy producers from Australia optioned it and are currently working on developing the movie. No new updates yet. But I’m very excited to announce that the UNREMEMBERED trilogy was also optioned for film! By the producers of Vampire Academy, Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi, and Slumdog Millionaire! WOOT! They’re currently working on finding a writer to write the script.

2)     When you are reading what is your favourite part to read?

I love beginnings and I love endings. Those are also my favorite parts to write! I love seeing how other authors introduce their stories and characters and world and how they wrap everything up.

3)     When writing who are your target audience?

My target audience first and foremost is me. If I’m not bored out of my mind with what I’m writing, then hopefully no one else will be. If I can make myself laugh and cry and gasp in surprise, then I know I’m on the right track. After that, I don’t really have a target audience. I just want people to enjoy the stories I’m telling. Whether you’re a girl, guy, teen, adult, parent, grandparent. I’ve even tried to read the books aloud to my dogs. Although I will say, they are not my target audience.

4)     What do you think people search for in your books?

I hope they search for entertainment first and foremost. I do always have some kind of positive message or theme in each of my books but my first goal is always to entertain and keep you hooked. If I’ve done that, anything else you get out of it is just an awesome bonus!

5)     Do you use your own experiences to write your books?

It’s hard not to! I definitely put my own experiences in my books. Although now that I’m writing my ninth novel, I’m starting to run out. I better get out of my writing cave and start having some new experiences so I have something to write about!

6)     When naming your characters do you look at the meaning of the names first?

Not always. I usually search for the right “sounding” name. I always know immediately whether a name is working or not, just by how it looks on the page. Then I look it up to make sure it doesn’t mean something awful like “One who barfs.”

7)     How and what research did you do for the Unremembered trilogy?

I did a TON of research for this trilogy! Much more than I’m used to doing for my contemporaries. For book 1, Unremembered, I did a lot of research on gene manipulation, memory manipulation, and synthetic biology. For books 2 and 3, I did a lot of research on futuristic technology and what our society will look like in 100 years.

9)    Unremembered is the first series you have written, did you enjoy writing it or do you prefer writing novels?
I love writing standalone novels but the series was a fun challenge since I’d never written one before. Now that I’m done, I can say, I’m very proud of it. But it was really difficult. I’m ready to write another standalone again. Something contemporary. After that, who knows! Maybe I’ll get the itch to write a series again!

8)     What’s next for Sera and Zen now that you have finished writing the Unremembered trilogy

is it really over?

SOB! It’s really over! I just finished writing book 3, UNCHANGED, which will be out in February 2015 in the US and UK. I’m very happy with the way it ended. It was the ending I had planned all along. I am also planning to write another eBook novella that will come out before book 3. So I can look forward to revisiting Sera and Zen once more before I have to say goodbye forever!

But then we can look forward to the film!

10) Other than the release of Undiscovered and Unforgotten what can fans look forward to in

2014?

I don’t have much else planned for 2014. But 2015 will be the year of UNCHANGED! I can’t wait for you all to read the ending to this trilogy! I hope you like it!

My Interview with Alyson Noel

I had the honour to interview Alyson Noel in 2012 about her novels and the Immortal Series. Now two years later I am interviewing Alyson again to get more gossip on Ever and Damen, the Souls Seeker series and what she has coming up this year.

   

1.  As you know I loved Ever and Damen. Can we look forward to reading more of their adventures in the future?

When I finished writing EVERLASTING, I really felt that Ever and Damen’s journey was over, that I took them to the end of their adventure and it was up to them to find their way from there. While I still feel their story is complete, I’ve definitely toyed with the idea of a spin-off. I left an opening in EVERLASTING, and when I find time, I might just play around with that and see where it leads. I miss my trips to Summerland!

2.  When naming characters do you give much thought to the actual meaning of the names?

Character’s names are a big part of the process. I can’t fully conceive of a character until I’ve given them just the right name, which has turned me into a bit of a name collector. I’m always on the hunt for interesting or unusual names and I keep them in a file that I peruse whenever I begin a new book.

3.  Now that the Soul Seekers series is over are you planning a spin-off series like you did with the Immortal series?

While I definitely left an opening at the end of HORIZON, at the moment I’m busy working on my new, three book series, UNRIVALED, and I’m completely immersed in that world. Still, I’ve learned to never say never…

4.  Are there any recent works that you admire?

Definitely! I just got an ARC of Mary Pearson’s newest, THE KISS OF DECEPTION, I’ve wanted to read this since she first told me about it, and I was only a paragraph in when I found myself hooked. Her writing is so fluid and elegant—I’m a huge fan.

I read really widely, so other recent reads I’ve enjoyed are: WONDER by R.J. Palacio, THE RING & THE CROWN by Melissa de la Cruz, NIGHT FILM by Marisha Pessl, WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE? by Maria Semple, and ME BEFORE YOU by JoJo Moyes.

5.  Is there any news on a movie or T.V series for the Immortal series?

At the moment, there’s no news on an IMMORTALS movie or TV show, but THE SOUL SEEKERS series has been optioned by Cheyenne Enterprises and I’m very hopeful they can make something happen. Also, my adult novel, FLY ME TO THE MOON, is still under option with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions with Sharon Maguire of Bridget Jones’s Diary fame set to write the screenplay and direct.

6.  What do you think people look for in your books?

Oh, I can never be sure what people are looking for, or what they’ll take away for that matter. I just try to provide a fun, romantic, adventurous, entertaining, inspiring, and ultimately optimistic read and hope I succeed in parlaying that to the reader!

7.  What type of research did you do for the Soul Seeker series?

I’m really big on research, and the more hands on the better! Even though THE SOUL SEEKERS involves themes of mysticism, alternate dimensions, magic, and more, I like to ground the story in as much realism as I can. I took a three-day ‘Introduction to Basic Shamanism’ course where I journeyed to the Lowerworld and met my spirit animal much like Daire Santos does in Fated. I travelled to New Mexico where the series takes place and interviewed local teens about their high school experiences, as well as a Native American about life on the reservation. I read loads of books on Shamanism, mysticism, Curanderas, Native American lore, and more. Everything I experienced help to enrich the world of the books.

8.  Did you enjoy doing the research and did you learn a lot of new information?

The research is my favourite part. Not only does it serve the stories, but enriches my life in ways I don’t always expect.

9.  Do you use your own experiences in your books?

Always, I steal from my own life all the time! I figure if an experience didn’t kill me, I may as well write about it.

10.      What can your fans look forward to in 2014

Well, believe it or not, this is the first year since 2005 when I’m not releasing a book! I wrote 21 novels, 3 stories for anthologies, and went on countless international tours over the course of the last 9 years, and so last year, when I finished HORIZON I took a yearlong break from writing to reacquaint myself with the other parts of my life and determine where to go next. I have a middle grade Christmas book coming out sometime in 2015, and I’m currently working on UNRIVALED, a new 3 book series that I’m very excited about. It’s set to debut in early 2016.

My Interview with Vicki-Ann Bush

I had the pleasure to interview Vicki-Ann Bush. Vicki-Ann is a new to me author.

      

1.  Where are you from?

New York

2.  When and why did you begin writing?

When I was about thirteen there was a city contest. You had to write a book and construct it. I was hooked.

3.  Did you always want to be an author?

I knew I enjoyed writing but it wasn't until my mid-thirties that I thought I'd like to do it more professionally.

4.  How long each day/week do you dedicate to writing?

It varies. Sometime I write several hours a day for about four or five days. And other times, it may just be a couple of hours for a day or two.

5.  What is your favourite part of a book to write?

My favourite part to write is always the beginning. The story is new and just formulating, for me that's the most interesting time.

6.  In your spare time what do you like to read?

I love anything that is usually paranormal, but my favourite is time travel mixed in with a love story.

7.  What do you do when you’re not writing?

I like family time when I'm not writing and a good book to read from time to time.

8.  If you could work with any author, who would it be and why?

Dean Koontz. He is my most favourite author.

9.  What do you do when you get writers block?

I write to music. So when I'm blocked, I choose something new to make my mind wander and create.

10.      What advice would you give to someone who "ran out of creativity" while writing?

Just that. Find music that moves you and sets the tone for what you're writing. For example … For The Dusk Chronicles I wrote to Imagine Dragons and 30 Seconds to Mars. But for my upcoming book, The Garden of Two, I wrote the whole book to the Cold Play song Viva La Vida. I kept it playing on a continuous loop.

11.      When naming your characters do you look at their meanings first?

Sometimes. Once again it depends on if the names have bearing on the story or if they're just names I liked.

12.      What inspired you to write your latest story?

A night’s sky.

13.      What is it about?

It's a YA Paranormal for an upcoming anthology book and it's about Angels and Lucifer.

14.      Did you do any research for your last book if so what research did you do?

I researched names and their meanings in reference to Archangels, Angels, Demons and Arch demons as well as some of the other characters. I used Christian references from the bible and other stories.

15.      Have you ever gotten rid of a character or changed a character in a book before publishing and then regretted it?

No. I usually like who my characters are at the time they go to publish.

16.      Who are the target readers?

My target audience is young teens to older teens. But my books seem to have a wide audience ranging from thirteen to eighty-three.

17.      What do you think readers look for in a book?

I think that depends on the reader. Some choose romance, some mystery, it varies.

18.      Why should a reader pick up/buy your book?

I'm told my stories are easy to read and interesting. It leaves you as the reader wanting more. I think that's a good reason for them to read. Don't you?

19.      What can we look forward to in 2014?

I have the release for my historical romance, The Garden of Two tentatively in May. Then the short story for the anthology in latter Fall/early Winter and I've also just completed a sci-fi with a bit of romance thrown in. That's in its preliminary editing and I will submit to the publisher when the polish is done, so we'll see.

20.      Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I love to hear feedback from the readers and really appreciate it when they leave posts on my author page or on Face Book and reviews on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. It's also great to meet them, so if you live in the Las Vegas/Henderson area, I have my upcoming appearances always posted on the FB page. Please come out, I would love to meet you.

Of Royal Descent by Ember Shane

Of Royal Descent was sent to me for an honest review by the author. It is the debut novel of Ember Shame's, it is a New Adult Paranormal Romance which is my favourite genre to read, it is a fast-paced book in places and the first in the trilogy and there is some suspense throughout.

Of Royal Descent was a great read and it is the first book about zombies that I have read I'm normally a vampire/witch Paranormal reader so I was unsure when I was first asked to read it as I didn't think that I would like it but I am glad that I accepted this book to review.

This is also the first book that I have read where the main character is male but Doyle is great. We find out that Doyle was adopted and his family isn't the perfect family everyone hopes for but his best friend Chuck is always there when Doyle needs him no matter what and the dialoge between them both was brilliantly funny and not over the top.

Doyle goes through a lot during the book and in some places it is hard to digest but the writing is great for a debut novel. Doyle pines for something he can no longer have, he goes in search of his granddad after discovering a huge family secret but they end up being thrown towards zombies.

Of course a good paranormal-romance book isn't complete without a girl who the main character is drawn to, Doyle meets Addy at a diner and there is mutual attraction and they end up dating but things with Doyle are changing and he has a crazy dream that he doesn't want to share with Addy as he doesn't want her to think he is crazy, beside they have just met.

Doyle's dreams start to drift into his waking state and other secrets start to be revealed, secrets that are connected to his families history and he has to embrace that if he want to make it out alive.

Will Doyle and Chuck's friendship ever be broken? Who knows we will have to wait for the next book.

The plot is out of the norm for what I would read and I would recommend this novel to anyone but especially fans of paranormal and sci-fi.

My Interview with Amy Plum

I read Die For Me late 2013 and I wanted to know where Amy Plum got her idea for the Revenant series from and what she had coming up in 2014 and she agreed to answer 5 questions for the blog.

      

1)  I love the idea of Revenants because I've never seen anything like them in any other books. Where did you get the idea from?

When I decided to write a paranormal romance, I had no idea what type of supernatural creature I wanted to use. I actually made a list with vampires, werewolves, mummies, unicorns...everything I could think of. And none really appealed to me. So I mixed two beings: gods and zombies. I actually called revenants "zombies" in the first draft of the book, but once Kate and Vincent kissed decided I had to change it. I used the French word "revenant," which means "spirit that comes back for a purpose." And little by little, the rules and mythology started falling into place.

2)  So far there are three books in the series will there be more in the series or do you plan on doing a spin-off or is it over?

There are actually four books in the series. I added a novella called "DIE FOR HER," which is written from Jules's point of view. It is only available by eBook, but my readers seem to really love it. As for writing more revenant books, I am considering the idea. Why not? :)

3)  When naming your characters do you give thought to the actual meaning of the names?

Some of the names I actually researched. I wanted them to be era-appropriate. So for Ambrose, I looked at African American soldiers in WWII and took his name from the list. Same for Jean-Baptiste - I put his name together from a list of Napoleon's officers. Jules was a common name around the turn of the century. Kate and Vincent were just off the top of my head. Charlotte and Charles seemed like names someone would give their twins in the beginning of the 20th century. Georgia is just Georgia. She couldn't be anything else. And some of the minor characters I named after friends - just to make them happy! :)

4)  What do you find the hardest part of a book to write?

That's a difficult question. I guess it would be the middle. The beginning's so exciting, and I always get fired up when I get to the end. But getting over the hump I suppose is the hardest part. Knowing that there is still so much to be resolved.

5)  What can fans of your work look forward to in 2014?

2014 is a BIG year for me, because the first book in my JUNEAU series comes out: AFTER THE END (May 2014). Also, the U.S. paperback version of IF I SHOULD DIE will be released in April, and that will include (in the extras) an epilogue written by Gaspard five years after the end of the book. I hope everyone enjoys (and agrees) with what happens to our Parisian characters!

Avenging Amethyst by Kaitlyn Price

Avenging Amethyst is Kaitlyn's debut book which I received for an honest review.

The book is about three vampire clans, the half breeds called Lovac, Zhulik and Nesmyrs which are presented in different and unique ways. You can tell which clan a vampire belongs to by looking at their eyes. Lovacs have purple eyes and Nesmyrs have red eyes (having red eyes makes them evil vampires)

Avery and her mum have been on the run the whole of Avery's life, but the story starts off with her mum unfortunately involved in an accident and ends up in hospital, while her mum is in the hospital a ghost woman appears and snaps her mums neck and then just disappears as quickly as she appeared and Avery ends up on the run trying to find answers to what happened to her mother.

While Avery who is a Lovac is on the run she meets Felix also a Lovac and she ends up falling further into the the supernatural world.

Kaitlyn explains everything to the reader so that they don't get confused as to who the characters are and I found myself really enjoying Avery's new world just as much as Avery did.

The book is my kind of book, I love fantasy stories about vampires, witches and anything magical. Kaitlyn does a great job of bringing the characters to life by into detail about who the character is and which supernatural group they belong with.

There are also a fourth type of creatures in the story called Dimidium's these creatures are able to keep the darkness calm by taming the beasts.

Lovac's cannot be with the same species/race meaning that they cannot get with another Lovac but they are able to get with a Dimidium in order to survive as they are Lovac's soul mate so to enable them not to go crazy from the darkness and to stop the world from falling into darkness, it helps to keep the world balanced.

The only problem is, Avery and Felix are both Lovac's and my feeling is that they like each other but unless there going to break the rules in a future book they cannot be together and this made me feel sad for Avery who has lost everything.

The plot is easy to follow as it is written so beautifully written. I cannot wait until book 2 comes out as I want to know what happens next.

I recommend this book to everyone even if your not a supernatural book fan because this is a new take on vampires.
