Top 10 Tuesday

This weeks Top 10 Tuesday is: Top 10 authors I'm thankful for and why.

This is a really hard one because I have many favourite authors and I like them all for different reasons.

  1. Jenna Burtenshaw - I am thankful for Jenna because her book Wintercraft was the reason I decided to start my blog so if it wasn't for Jenna I would have never  made my blog. Jenna was also the first author I interviewed for my blog (Read interview here), and the Wintercraft series was the first series that I have ever finished. I am also thankful because she didn't kill Silas Dane in the Wintercraft series (THANK YOU FOR THAT) even though in some places I was sure she was going to and because we both love Castle for one haha. - I am Currently waiting for Jenna's new book (wish it would hurry up because I am DYING to read it (read about it here))
  2. Alyson Noel - I am thankful for Alyson because she brought me Damon and Ever - love them - (even though the series didn't quest end the way I hoped), and she also brought me the second and third series I read. If it wasn't for Alyson's Immortal series and Riley Bloom series, I think I would probably wouldn't be reading as much as I do now. (Read interview here). I'm sad that there is not more Damon and Ever but glad I have her new series to keep me occupied and I am sure I will fall in love with Dace and Daire like it did with Ever and Damon.
  3. Jessica Brody - I am thankful for Jessica because her books always make me laugh (except UNREMEMBERED it made me scream because of how it ended and knowing I have to wait a REALLY long time before I can read book 2 :p), I also interviewed Jessica (Read interview here).
  4. Rose Impey - Rose wrote one of the first books I ever read and really truly appreciated and loved (The Sleepover Club) I was also lucky enough to interview Rose (Read interview here).
  5. E.B. White - Charlotte's Web need I say more.
  6. C. S. Lewis - C. S Lewis brought us the Chronicles of Narnia one of the best books ever written and films ever made I Love Aslan.
  7. Dorothy Edwards - Dorothy wrote the first books I ever read (My Naughty Little Sister) over and over and over again which is why I am thankful of her.
  8. Jodi Picoult - I am thankful for Jodi because she wrote the first book that ever made me stay up till late just to finish the book (I stayed up until 3am reading My Sisters Keeper just because I refused to sleep until I found out if Anna got what she wanted) and it was the first proper book to make me cry. (By proper I mean not Charlotte's Web which is the only other book to make me cry)
  9. V. C. Andrews -  I am thankful for Virginia because her books are fab and her series Willow was the first series I ever read (never completed though I only read the first three and half books). I have read a few of her first in the series books but when I read them I wasn't as big a reader as I am now so I didn't want to read the rest of the series but eventually I will read the whole series of them all from the start.
  10. Claudia Gray - Claudia wrote the first vampire series I have read, yet again Evernight is the only series about vampires I have read, even though I have yet to finish the series but Evernight was amazing and because this year is dedicated to reading books in series or finishing a series I have started I will get to finish reading them.
If it wasn't for most of these authors (mainly Jenna, Jessica and Alyson) I don't think my blog would have gone anywhere.

Growing Up in Books

Again I saw this on my cousins blog and she got it from else where (link to where she got it from is in her post)

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved to read and was more interested in books than my siblings. From a young age my cousin and I would read the same book at the same time just to see who could finish first I think Cazz beat me every time but it was fun trying to beat her. Like Cazz I was definitely one of those kids that hid under the covers so I could read after my bedtime. Most of my family are big readers especially my mum, cousin Cazz and Cazz’s mum so I was always encouraged to read.
I don’t remember every book I have ever read I probably don’t even remember half of the books I have read growing up but I do remember reading a lot of Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton.

I know for a fact that I haven’t read every book that the two authors have written but I have read quite a lot of them and if I had to choose between the two authors I would choose Roald Dahl I could read Matilda and The Witches over and over again. And at 24 I would be quite content sat reading any book that either of the two wrote.

While my cousin was reading The Babysitters Club and Nancy Drew I was reading anything I could get my hands on but one book that I remember reading over and over is My Naughty Little Sister it has to be the best book I have ever read (I am currently looking for the a new copy of the book as mine has gotten a bit ruined over the year so if anyone knows where I can get a copy of it please comment it has to be the one where there’s a story in it called My Naughty Little Sister and the Solid Silver Watch).

When I got to junior school (age 8) we read Charlotte’s Web in class and I loved it that much my parents got me the book. A year later I started reading The Sleepover Club series and these books helped me get through the tough time I was having at school, every time I opened a new book or turned the I was sucked further into the series and by the time I went to high school (age 11) I had read almost the whole series.

During high school I didn’t read as much as I used to because my friends would make fun. I know now that I should have just ignored them and read if I wanted to but after being bullied in junior school I didn’t want it to carry on in high school. I know that during the summer holidays in high school I used to spend them at my Nan’s and come home with a load of Children’s Classic Book’s (Heidi, The Railway Children, The Secret Garden etc) that I got from the market or for 99p from the book shop. Cazz also collected these books so we went back to reading the same books while I was at my Nan’s and like before she would always beat me and finish first.

In my last year of high school I started reading my mums Virginia Andrew’s books because I didn’t have anything of my own to read because I stopped reading I never bought any books so they were the only books in the house that I hadn’t read, I read the first book of the two series but didn’t want to read the rest. After high school Cazz lent me My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult and after reading that I started to read more often I borrowed a few Jodi Picoult books from her and my college tutor and then I decided that I wanted to read books by other authors and signed up to the library and borrowed books all the time.

In 2009 I caught the book buying bug from Cazz and spent practically all my money buying books from The Works or Asda.

In 2010 I got myself a copy of Alyson Noel’s Evermore it is the best Young Adult romance book I have ever read and I read all but the last book in the series and another series I have loved reading is Wintercraft by Jenna Burtenshaw, Wintercraft is the first series I have actually finished and loved every minute of it and I am sad that it ended.

Now I am reading more and more books I find that every month my to read list gets bigger and bigger and I know I will never finish all the books I have bought because I admit it I am addicted to buying books.

Growing up with books was fantastic and I can’t imagine what my life would be like without books, I am glad that they have always been a part of my life each book has its own story to tell and its own hidden meaning that each reader interprets there own way.

My Interview with Rose Impey

Rose Impey (the author of the Sleepover Club) agreed to answer some questions for my blog and this is what she had to say

1) Where are you from?
I was born in Northwich, in Cheshire, where my family still lives.

2) When and why did you begin writing?
I started writing about thirty years ago. I'd previously been a primary school teacher but stopped teaching to have my children, two daughters, Rachel and Charlotte.  When they went to school I'd fully expected to go back to teaching, but a happy accident with my back prevented that from happening and it was during that period I decided to have a go at writing. I was lucky enough to have my first book accepted and I've been writing ever since.

3) Did you always want to be an author?
When I was growing up it wouldn't have entered my head that it was even a possibility.  I was always a great reader but it was only as an adult, after I had children that I began to entertain the idea.

4) How long each day/week do you dedicate to writing?
I have a very regular routine: I get up early and go to the gym or swimming, come back and have breakfast and then start writing.  I write most of every day until 5 or 6pm.

5) What do you do when you’re not writing?
I love gardening, sewing, walking, dancing, cinema and theatre. Socialising is very important when you spend all day every day on your own!

6) In your spare time what do you like to read?
I read fiction, often modern American novels. I like books that make me laugh or cry!

7) And what are you reading at the moment?
Sebastian Barry On Canaans Side. The writing is so good that has made me cry!

8) When you were younger who were your favourite author?
When I was growing up we just didn't have the choice there is nowadays. Mostly we read Enid Blyton and individual books like Little Women, Heidi... My absolute favourite was Treasure Island. But I also remember reading Grimms Fairy Tales over and over again.

9) Other than the Sleepover Club are there any of your other novels that you would turn into a Movie or T.V. show if so which one and why?
I really think my novel Six Feet Deep would make a great single drama, but I'd love to see my Titchywitch stories for young readers made into a cartoon series.

10) My sister, cousin and I loved the sleepover club books when we were kids that much that we set up are own sleepover club we did challenges and had our own SOC book, membership cards and rules. Since it became really big have many other fans told you that they have started their own club?
Yes, lots and lots. I probably had more fan mail for Sleepover than anything else I've written.  One of the most common questions was: How do you know what kind of things girls do and say to each other when they're on their own? My answer was: “I have my spies. And I did! I had a few girls who shared all their secrets with me for which I am very grateful.”

11) What inspired you to write The Sleepover Club?
The idea actually was one of two or three I offered to my publishers when they were looking for a commercial series idea for girls of 9+

12) How do you come up with your story ideas?
I'm not really joking about collecting children's secrets. I do find going into school and talking to kids gives me all my best ideas.  Things they say and do often triggers off my own memories and then my imagination starts to work, but I often need the real ideas to act as a catalyst.

13) Are you working on anything new at the moment if so can you tell us anything about it?
I'm just finishing a new series for very young readers. This time it's about a little knight called Sir Lancelittle.  But later in the autumn I'm hoping to start a new novel for older readers and no, sorry, can't say anything about that until I'm really into it.

14) If you could do it over again, is there anything you would change in any of your books?
Oh, yes, lots. Probably something in every book I’ve written. You work and work a story until you start to feel you ought to stop before you completely write all the life out of it. You write until the point when you feel you can't improve a single word. But then the printed book arrives and you read it and even on the first page you think: Oh, no, why did I put that, that's rubbish, if only I could change it, but by then you can't!

15) Out of all your books, which is your favourite character and why?
I realise now that I've written a variation on the same character in several of my books: he's a boy of about 10 or 11 who's incredibly full of himself, totally irrepressible and hugely annoying to be around... Like Baxter in The Get Rich Quick Club. I love boys like that, they really make me laugh!

16) When writing about something you don't know much about where do you get your information?
I'm a bit pathetic when it comes to research.  I'm always scared to get it wrong so in the end I don't do it a lot, I play safe and write about what I know mostly.  This is a weakness I'm afraid. When I do any research I use reference books, Internet, but I prefer to try to find people who are experts in the field. I like to do as much face-to-face research as I can.

17) For you what is the easiest part of the book to write?
THE END! No, seriously, it varies enormously. When it goes well it all feels easy, but more often than not most of it feels hard.

18) ...And the hardest?
Getting started probably. You've got the ideas but there comes a point when you have to commit to the screen/page. Even after all this time I still get anxious before I really get into each book.  In fact, I probably get more anxious the older I get.

19) How do you choose the names for your books and characters?
Difficult question. They really do mostly come from your imagination. You always know when you've got it right because the name really fits, like a good set of clothes. The worst thing is when you get a name and can't have it because someone else has used it or similar.  That's very frustrating.

20) Have you ever gotten rid of a character or changed a character in a book before publishing and then regretted it?
No, I don't think I have. There are lots of things you regret but they're more likely to be things you left in and shouldn't have than the other way round.

21) What advice would you give to someone who "ran out of creativity" while writing?
Take a break. Whenever it happens to me it's because I'm creatively tired out. Last year I took six months off writing and came back re-charged. Sometimes as a writer you feel like a battery that's lost its charge, especially after thirty years!.

22) What do you do when you get writers block?
See above. But also I go into schools and sit and talk to kids. That always gives me ideas and, even more importantly, energy.

23) Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Thanks for choosing my books and please, if there's one that you don't like, try others because I do write lots of different stuff.
And...send me your secrets!!!!!

Thank you for your time Rose I will be enjoying the Sleepover Club books forever.
